UC San Diego
Academy for Transfer Students

The 2017 UC San Diego Academy for Transfer Students is intended for incoming transfer students who will be entering UC San Diego in the Fall quarter from a community college or from a four year college.  It is a five-week program where students can earn 8 units of credit (10 units for CSE and Math-CS students) in the major. The Academy primarily consists of gateway courses that are not typically offered at community colleges. The Academy also includes advising and other activities to help students smoothly transition to UC San Diego.

The goals of the program include a strong academic foundation for incoming transfer students so that they can make rapid progress academically and graduate sooner. While the course work is intense, each student will get individual attention and help with the course material.

All students admitted to UC San Diego through one of the following three departments in 2017 are eligible to participate in the Academy. Individual program details and course prerequisites are available through the corresponding web pages.

  1. Biological Sciences
  2. Computer Science and Engineering (CSE) (including computer engineering majors from the ECE Department)
  3. Mathematics

Fee and Financial Aid

The fee for the program is $2,351.10, which includes the tuition for 8 units at the rate of $273 per unit and the campus-based fee of $167.10. CSE students who are required to register for 10 units will be given credit for 2 units so they only have to pay $2,351.10 towards tuition and fee.

Financial aid loans and/or grants are available to assist eligible students and families in paying the cost to attend the Academy. Students are encouraged to apply for financial aid to determine eligibility for loans or grants. International students are not eligible for Federal or State financial aid and therefore are expected to pay the fee of $2,351.10 from family resources.

Housing and Dining Options

Due to the intensive scheduling of classes, tutoring and other academic and social activities, all students are given options for residential or dining only benefits. Students are expected to choose between the following two options. There is no charge for the students regardless of the option.

Option I: Room and board on UC, San Diego campus for the entire period of the Academy from August 6th through September 9th, 2017 with a Blue Dining Plan which provides $16.43 a day in dining dollars.  This option may be suitable for students who want to live on campus for the 5-week period.  If students find the dining dollars inadequate, they can purchase additional dining dollars. For a complete list of housing options, please consult the HDH website. Please scroll down the page to find summer housing information under the section 'HDH Traditional Summer Housing Program (ERC Apartments)'.

Option II: A grant of $575 in the form of a Dining Plan Card  towards meal expenses during the 5-week period. This option may be suitable for those students who plan to live off-campus, but take advantage of the HDH dining facilities. For more information on HDH dining services, please check https://hdh.ucsd.edu/dining/pages/
